Born and brought up in New York City, Kate is a former high school teacher at Central Park East Secondary School who had planned to start a Masters of Divinity and possible journalism school program at Harvard, Yale, or Columbia University.
In January 2005, Kate's plans were interrupted by a cerebral hemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm, which caused partial paralysis along her right side and severe speech and language deficits, leaving her initially unable to get out of bed, speak, read, or write. She has since been recovering through an extensive program of physical, speech, and occupational therapy at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at NYU Medical Center.
Kate's true key to successful recovery, however, has been her family, friends, and therapists. Her advisor, Anne McGuire, completed Kate's Yale application for her while Kate was still in a coma in ICU; her surgeon, Dr. Riina, and his nurse Lucille have been a strong support as well as preserving her life and prospects for recovery; her therapists Jen and Karen have given her friendship as well as a strong program of therapy; and her friends and family have contributed in every possible way to her health and happiness. Kate feels very lucky to have such wonderful people in her life.
Until she is able to write, Kate has been expressing herself and exploring her intelligence and creativity by painting landscapes and seascapes, making hand-drawn T-shirt designs, and especially crafting custom cards using watercolors, inks, found materials, and many other artistic resources. Recently, Kate's fellow patients have also become interested in producing these cards.
Kate and her fellow patients and friends therefore have started a project to provide these cards to a wider market, with the proceeds going to fund services to patients recovering from or coping with severe physical trauma, brain injuries, or degenerative disorders.
